How to ensure high-quality nutrition and safety of schoolchildren

kids_schoolThe best start to the day is a hearty breakfast

Schoolchildren who are full in the morning study better, concentrate faster and are more energetic. According to the results of research, children who receive a sufficiently nutritious breakfast feel much better than those who are limited to a token sandwich with tea.

– Most schools regularly send the weekly canteen menu home and/or post it on the school website. Having read this information in advance, you can plan your child's meals by giving him a packed lunch on days when the menu contains dishes that he prefers not to have.

- Before giving your child money to buy products from school vending machines, familiarize yourself with their assortment. Vending machines should contain healthy foods such as fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese, water and natural fruit juices. Learn about the school's child wellness policy and participate in the work of groups to make it more effective.

- Consider: every 400 ml of a sweet soft drink contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. If a child regularly drinks this much (and that's one small bottle!) of flavored soda, he will have a 60% increased risk of obesity. So try to buy healthier foods and drinks at home and during walks to accustom your child to them.

Child control

- Younger and middle-aged children should be under special supervision. You or another responsible adult must hand the children over to the teacher at school in the morning and pick them up after class.

- It is advisable to observe your children in younger grades during the school day. Schools often install access control systems, for example ASIK "School - Safe school", which make it possible to quickly receive information about the child's activities in the educational institution using SMS and e-mail messages.

- If another person will take care of your child, tell them about the need to follow the rules you have established regarding discipline and homework.

- Children approaching adolescence (11-12 years old) should not return to an empty house in the afternoon if they demonstrate unusual maturity for their age.

- If it is not possible to ensure constant adult supervision of the child, parents should make special efforts to monitor the student from a distance. The child is obliged to come home at the appointed time and his arrival must be checked by neighbors or parents by landline phone.

- If you choose a paid after-school program for your child, first of all, find out about the level of training of the staff and the measures taken to ensure the safety of children in the premises and on the grounds.

The influence of various factors on the child

– Create an environment conducive to homework. Children need their own corner to work in the bedroom or another part of the house, where it is quiet and nothing distracts from educational matters.

- The child should have enough time for high-quality homework. So the circles and sections are only after completing the lessons.

- Establish an unbreakable rule - the TV and other electronic gadgets must be turned off while doing homework.

- Monitor the child's use of the computer and the Internet, especially his activity in social networks.

- Always be ready to answer the student's questions and offer your help, but never do homework for him.

- Help your child reduce eye, neck, and brain fatigue while studying - teach him to take active breaks between classes. For example, close the books for a few minutes, stretch, stand up and do several exercises for different muscle groups.

- If your child did not understand a topic and you are not able to help him, then classes with a tutor can solve the problem. Discuss this point first with your child's teacher.

- Some children - very active or, on the contrary, phlegmatic - need organization of the process of carrying out lessons. Timing, timers and parental supervision can help a child overcome problems with homework.

- If your child has difficulty concentrating to start or finish lessons, discuss this problem with the teacher, school psychologist or child's doctor.

- The daily schedule should include sufficient time for sleep, therefore, schoolchildren are obliged to go to bed at a certain time and without talking. Lack of sleep is associated with lower performance in middle and high school, as well as a high rate of absenteeism and tardiness. The optimal duration of sleep for most teenagers is 8.5-9.5 hours per day.
