The Ministry of Education hopes for a positive conclusion of the Venice Commission regarding the language article of the law "On Education". The Minister of Education and Science Lilia Hrynevych said this during a meeting with the head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Hugo Mingarelli.
According to the minister, the issue of implementation of the language article of the law "On Education" will be agreed upon in bilateral negotiations with representatives of national minorities.
"Our position is that in preschool and primary school education is carried out in the native language, from the 5th grade the percentage of subjects studied in Ukrainian begins to gradually increase, and in high school this percentage should increase to 60% subjects studied in the state language. We hope for a positive conclusion of the Venice Commission, since from a legal point of view the text of the language article of the Law "On Education" fully complies with both our legislation and our international obligations. The law lays down real opportunities for children to fully master both the state and native languages, in case of difference," said Hrynevych.
She emphasized that the text of the law is based on European values and defines the structure of education, which is consistent with the structure functioning in the EU countries.
In turn, Hugues Mingarelli emphasized that it is very unfortunate that the situation has reached the level of such a scandal, because the general discussion is now being conducted around an issue that does not relate to the really important problems of Ukraine today.
"We understand your argument and are ready to convey this position to Brussels," said the head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Hugo Mingarelli.
