According to the Law of Ukraine "On General Secondary Education" (Article 16), general educational institutions establish the structure of the academic year in agreement with local education management bodies.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine recommends organizing educational classes according to the semester system (in accordance with the letter of the Ministry of Education and Culture dated 06/11/2014 No. 1/9-303).

Recommended terms of the semesters:

- I semester - from September 1 to December 26 (until December 27 for schools that work according to a six-day work week);

- II semester - from January 12 to May 29 (30).

Vacations are recommended to be spent in the following terms:

- autumn - from October 27 to November 2;

- winter - from December 29 to January 11;

- spring - from March 23 to 29.

In accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On General Secondary Education" (Article 34), at the end of the academic year, state final certifications are held for school graduates: - primary (May 12-21), in the form of final tests in three subjects: reading, Ukrainian language and mathematicians;

– primary (June 1-8), in written form from three subjects: Ukrainian language, mathematics or history and from a subject chosen by students;

- senior year (May 22-28), in written form from three subjects: Ukrainian language, mathematics or history and from a subject chosen by the students.

The Ministry of Education recommends handing over education documents for 9th grade graduates on June 10-11, and for 11th graders on May 30-31.

General educational institutions determine the expediency of educational practice and educational excursions independently.
