The Kyiv city government is looking for additional funds to increase the cost of free meals for elementary school students and students of grades 5-11 in preferential categories. This was announced by the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Hanna Starostenko.
"We are working to improve the quality of food in educational institutions, which depends primarily on its cost. To date, we have already managed to find an additional UAH 35 million to increase the price of one portion from UAH 8.2 to UAH 10.8. We hope that the budget will be adjusted soon, and funding will increase," she said.
At the same time, Hanna Starostenko noted that this amount is not enough for a child's full nutrition: "According to our calculations, the price of one lunch should be 12 hryvnias on average. For this city, it is necessary to find an additional almost 20 million hryvnias."
The deputy head of the KMDA also reminded that this year the city provided free meals to all students of grades 1-4 and students of preferential categories of grades 5-11. The relevant order of the KMDA No. 59 was issued on February 5.
According to the document, free meals in Kyiv in 2016 will be provided to students of grades 1-4 of general educational institutions, as well as schoolchildren of grades 5-11 from among orphans, children deprived of parental care, children with special educational needs who study in special and inclusive classes, disabled children and students from families receiving assistance in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On State Social Assistance to Low-income Families". In addition, free meals are provided to students of grades 5-11 from among children from the families of participants in the anti-terrorist operation and children from the families of the deceased participants in the anti-terrorist operation.
The order also emphasizes the need for systematic monitoring of the nutrition status of children in preschools and students in general educational institutions.
