New approaches to teacher education, Liliya Hrynevych

Ministr_noviy_interviuIt is impossible to carry out a high-quality reform of secondary education if it is not accompanied by a change in approaches to teacher training. This was stated by the Minister of Education and Science, Liliya Hrynevych, at a meeting of the higher education sector of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

"We declare a competency-based approach to secondary education content standards and a competency-based approach to teaching. For those who work in the education system, it is absolutely clear that they understand what it is, 10 % teachers. And this proves the crisis we are in," Liliya Hrynevych said.

Currently, the Ministry of Education and Culture is developing a new Concept of Pedagogical Education and new standards of higher education in general.

The Minister emphasized that the development of a quality framework - the Concept of Pedagogical Education - is decisive for the formation of pedagogical education standards. She noted that the Ukrainian school is in a post-Soviet crisis, when the modern world dictates new trends, and education is still focused on the usual memorization of facts, which are increasing every day.

Both the new Concept of Pedagogical Education and the standards, in particular, will determine the amount and quality of knowledge that a graduate of a higher educational institution should receive. The minister noted that the correct definition of educational outcomes of educators should be directly related to the concept of the new school.

"Now we are also preparing the teacher's educational code. Values are a very important element in teacher training, and the new concept must take them into account. The focus on ethics and values is the main feature of leading educational systems. Given the fact that the issue of the relationship between teachers and parents, teachers and children is becoming more and more common in our country, since we are in a difficult situation of a military conflict, the ethical training of teachers is an urgent issue," Liliya Hrynevych added.
