The Cabinet of Ministers appointed Serhii Shkarlet, rector of the Chernihiv National University of Technology, as Deputy Minister of Education and Science and at the same time assigned him the duties of acting Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine.
The corresponding decision was made at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on June 25.
As you know, Serhiy Shkarlet's candidacy was recommended by the rector's corps during the meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyi, which took place in early June.
At the same time, the possibility of appointing the rector of the Chernihiv University of Technology as the Minister of Education caused a wave of indignation among public activists and the mass media.
In particular, he is accused of cases of plagiarism in scientific works, inconsistency of income and expenses in the declaration, political sympathies for the Party of Regions, connections with ex-Minister of Education Dmytro Tabachnyk, etc.
On June 17, 2020, the Prime Minister submitted Scarlett's candidacy to the Parliament for appointment as Minister of Education and Science.
On June 18, the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, in which the majority consists of deputies from "Servant of the People", did not recommend the Verkhovna Rada to vote for his candidacy.
The resolution on the appointment was on the agenda of the Council on June 18, but the matter did not come up for consideration, since the necessary votes for the appointment of Scarlett to the position are not enough. A significant group of opponents of his candidacy is also in the presidential faction.
Serhiy Shkarlet was born on October 19, 1972.
He worked at the Chernihiv Institute of Technology at the Department of Accounting and Auditing Econometrics. He was also the vice-rector, and later the rector of the Chernihiv Institute of Information, Business and Law of the International Scientific and Technical University (part-time).
Since May 2010, he has been the rector of the Chernihiv State University of Technology.
