Starting in 2027, 7 subjects will be compulsory in high school: Ukrainian language, literature, history of Ukraine, English, mathematics, physical education and defence of Ukraine.
This was announced by the Ministry of Education and Science during the presentation of the reform of specialised education. Other subjects will be chosen by students depending on their study profile.
The MES is developing curricula and working to create academic lyceums that will provide a choice of subjects. Large educational institutions with several high school parallels will have a wider choice of subjects, as students can be grouped together to study different subjects. This is especially important for rural schools, where the number of students is usually limited.
Schools are also planning to introduce a career counsellor to help students choose their study profile. Students will be able to change their profile in grade 10 if they have difficulties with their choice.
In grade 10, compulsory subjects will prevail, and in grades 11-12, the number of specialised subjects and elective courses will increase.
